This ancient form of medicine is deeply rooted in the observation of nature and its cycles and processes. Of course, the human body and spirit is included here as a part of nature and we can see the same cycles apply to ourselves. Within the yearly cycle of the seasons we can see periods of rapid growth, full bloom, harvest, decline and quiescence. These phases are described by the five elements. Within a 24 hour cycle we can see yin and yang most clearly, yang rising with sun and yin ascending as the sun sets.

In the same way, the functions of the human body and the development of the spirit can be seen to follow a similar pattern when in balance. When out of balance, we can become ill, the body deteriorates and the spirit languishes.
